Ernest and Pauline Hemingway arrived in Key West in 1928 and lived in an apartment on Simonton Street, where he finished his novel “A Farewell To Arms." They fell in love with Key West – from the people to the clear blue waters where Hemingway loved to fish. The Hemingway home was built of native rock in 1851 in the Spanish Colonial style. The house on Whitehead Street, which was in great disrepair, was purchased in 1931 by Pauline's Uncle Gus.
Seeing beyond the ruin, Ernest and Pauline appreciated the grand architecture of the home and restored it through the 1930’s into the National Historical Landmark it is today. While living in the home, Hemingway used the people and places he knew in Key West in his literary works, and many are characters in his novel "To Have and Have Not” about Key West during the Great Depression.

  • What’s so famous about the Hemingway cats?

Meet over 50 cats that live at the Hemingway House, many descendants of Hemingway’s six-toed cat. While most cats have five front toes, Ernest Hemingway had a white six-toed cat named Snowball, which was given to him by a ship’s captain. Most of the cats that live at the home today have 6 toes and are directly related to Hemingway’s polydactyl cat. Following Hemingway’s tradition, all the playful cats are named after famous people.
